How Labour and Conservative immigration policies compare
Guardian
02.11.2007

The Tories want to reduce immigration by introducing a quota system for those wishing to enter the country. There are two key aspects to David Cameron's proposals: the first concerns rules for European Union migrants, the second for those from countries from outside the EU. Non-EU migrants are made up of asylum seekers, students, family members and economic migrants. The Tories are focusing on economic migrants for now and say policy announcements on asylum commitments would come much nearer to an election and be dictated by world events. Mr Cameron wants to cap the number of non-EU economic migrants coming into Britain - the government does not.
The government has no cap on the number of people from non-EU countries who want to work in the UK, and anyone wishing to work in Britain can do so on receipt of a work permit and visa. But from January 2008 this will change, and a limit will be enforced with a new points-based system.

Britain should slash migration levels
tvnz.co.nz
30.10.2007

ImageBritain is allowing too many immigrants to settle on its shores and should slash the number of people it takes in each year, Conservative leader David Cameron says.  Camero n says the Labour government has failed to tackle the problems of Britain's rapidly expanding population and needs to take urgent action. "What matters is the net (immigration) figure, which I believe is too high," Cameron will say in a major speech later today, according to excerpts printed in The Sun.
"We need policy to reduce the level of net immigration. It's about time we had a  grown-up conversation about it." Cameron's comments come after official figures released last week estimated that Britain's population will hit 65 million by 2016.

We must curb immigration says Cameron
Daily Express
29.10.2007

ImageDAVID Cameron will today make his first big speech on immigration, saying that he believes numbers are too high. The Tory leader will make an urgent call for a “grown-up conversation” about Britain’s rapidly-swelling population. He will claim that it is inevitable there will be a large number of people leaving and entering the UK these days. But he will also say it is necessary to reduce the overall number of immigrants. “What matters is the net figure, which I believe is currently too high,” Mr Cameron will tell an audience in London. His aides insisted last night that the speech was not a sign the Conservatives were about to return to tough anti-immigration policies.
One source close to the Tory leader said: “This is about population policy and the simple fact the Government doesn’t have one.” Mr Cameron’s speech comes after the Office for National Statistics last week predicted that within a decade there will be 65million people in the UK – an increase of five million.
