Debate in Parliament

On Wednesday 25 April, Greg Hands MP (Conservative, Hammersmith and Fulham), will lead a short debate in the UK Parliament to highlight the unfair nature of the restrictions placed on Romanian and Bulgarians seeking to work in the UK.

The purpose of his debate will be to demonstrate that the worker restrictions introduced for Romanian and Bulgarians are ineffective (there are many legal ways around them), costly (having this system in place costs the UK government many millions), unfairly discriminatory (Romanians and Bulgarians are being treated as second class citizens), and counter-productive (they can force people to work illegally, or force them into the hands of criminals or people traffickers).  For these reasons we consider it would be better to abandon the restrictions and allow Bulgarians and Romanians free access to the UK labour market.

To help Greg make the case for this change we urgently need information from Romanians in the UK.

‘Why this title?’ you might ask. In short, we have chosen this name because we believe that the concept of the Festival – Past Imperfect, Future Continuous – plays on the strengths and weaknesses of modernRomania. One could say that that single line is a synopsis of the country’s history. We all know what our imperfect past was – communist dictatorship. After 1989, Romania entered years of transition, a transition that hasn’t ended and still has no clear end in sight. Only the entry into the EU has managed to bring a sense of timing to this problem. This is our ‘future continuous’.

The film directors in this festival try to make various pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Our festival aims to present an image of Romania which is unknown in the UK.

At the core of this year’s programme are a number of daring, irreverent, often hilarious takes onRomania’s past imperfect. Many of the film-makers included in the programme invite a meditation on the uses of imagery in the construction of an idea of history and historical consciousness. Some of them touch on the production of historical memory, and on the collisions and collusions among individual and collective memories.

Past Imperfect, Future Continuous is an invitation to see some of the best Romanian films of recent years.

Confesiuni

ImageLa 1 ianuarie 2007 am intrat si eu in Europa. Deprimanta revenire. Dar nu pentru mult timp. Mare mi-a fost bucuria cind, dupa aterizarea la aeroportul din Londra, am intrat fara grija, cu pasaportul meu romanesc, pe coridorul de la „Tarile Uniunii Europene“ (EU Countries), lasind in urma coada nesfirsita si atit de familiara mie de la „Celelalte tari“ (All Other Countries). Pentru prima data in cei cinci ani de cind m-am stabilit la Londra se intimpla acest lucru. in prima zi a anului 2007, in prima zi a Romaniei ca membra in Uniunea Europeana. In sfirsit!

Absurditatea situatiei luase sfirsit.

Corespondenta Adrian Bucur

Dragilor,

ImageVa transmit, la sugestia domnului ministru-consilier Constantin Matache, corespondenta purtata cu Ministrul Afacerilor Europene, dl. Geoff Hoon si Cabinetul premierului britanic Tony Blair.

Multumesc,

--
