The times - they are definitely a-changing for Romanian cinema: it has made a spectacular leap onto front-page & red carpets across the world's most famous film festivals over the last few years, culminating this summer with the award of the Palme d'Or to Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days.
Shortly after The Times BFI 51st London Film Festival, we are happy to bring back to London a selection of 7 outstanding Romanian films - in a journey which traces back today's success to the mid '60, when iconic director Lucian Pintilie was making film well-beyond the constraints of a repressive Communist system.
The film season takes place during 16-21 November, at the Cine Lumiere, at the French Institute.
Programme
The films have been selected by the film critic Alex Leo Serban, who will join us in London to introduce the films & run the Q&A sessions with directors Cristian Mungiu and Tudor Giurgiu, scriptwriters Andreea Valean and Razvan Radulescu, editor Catalin Cristutiu and actresses Anamaria Marinca, Maria Dinulescu and Laura Vasiliu.
About Romanian cinema
The film season also includes a networking event at the Romanian Cultural Institute on 19 November at 7pm, when film critic & TIFF Director Mihai Chirilov presents Romania's leading annual film event - the TIFF (Transylvannia International Film Festival).
We are grateful to Artificial Eye for the pre-view screening of 4,3,2 and to the CNC (National Centre for Cinematography in Romania) for their help in bringing much sought-after copies of Romanian films to London.
Also we are happy to join the ground-breaking tradition of promoting Romanian cinema in London started by the Romanian Cultural Centre/Ratiu Family Foundation 5 years ago.
Romanian Cinema: A Journey is a project developed in partnership by the French Institute and the Romanian Cultural Institute.

‘Transtango’ is a unique multimedia performance bringing together the
acclaimed Alexander Balanescu with Pablo Mainetti, the most talented
composer of Argentina's new Tango generation, featuring special guest
star Elena Roger.
The new works, performed by the Balanescu Quartet, are integrated into
a cinematic projection that tells the story of the migration of people
and the mutation of culture in today's modern cities, while exploring
the rich and complex nature of tango culture born out of modern urban
experience.
Alexander Balanescu was born in Romania in 1950 the son of a University
lecturer who moved his family to Israel in 1969 to escape the
oppressive regime of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. As a result
Alexander lived a globe-trotting life, studying the violin in London
and at the Julliard school in New York before returning to the UK,
where he joined the Arditti Quartet. In 1987, Alexander Balanescu left
the Arditti Quartet to form his own Balanescu Quartet, which has gone
on to acquire a reputation as one of the world’s leading contemporary
music groups. Collaborators have included Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars,
Ornette Coleman, Peter Greenaway, David Byrne, the Pet Shop Boys,
Spiritualized, Kate Bush and Kraftwerk.
