18 - 25 september - The Golden Age of Couture

Doina Levintza comes to the UK to develop a new project in fashion design and theatre at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London for 2008. Her agenda includes a private view of "The Golden Age of Couture" exhibition at Victoria & Albert Museum, meetings with professionals from the fashion industry, set designers, journalists and fashion critics.

Levintza is a household name in Romania's fashion industry and her reputation for excellence goes far beyond state borders. In 1990 she set up her own modeling agency which specializes in theatre and film costumes and also in fashion. Her shows toured European and US fashion capitals such as Paris, Monte Carlo, London, Washington and New York.

Along with Dan Coma she was appointed "purveyor to the Royal Court of Romania" by HRH Princess Margarita, which is proof that "their creations can be placed at the same level with the big labels in the fashion industry".

When: 18-25 September 2007
Where: Victoria & Albert Museum, Romania Cultural Institute, London

“After a vicious war in 1991, the tiny region of the Republic of Moldova on the eastern bank of river Dniester has been occupied and landlocked by the Russian 14th army with an authoritarian and anti-democratic regime under Igor Smirnov. This regime, outlawed by the international community and branded as smuggling and banditry, is blamed for exporting mafia activities to the other side of the Republic of Moldova, and is affecting Moldova’s economic and political development. Thus, of huge concern are not only the valuable energy outlets and several thriving industrial enterprises controlled by Moscow and Smirnov’s regime, but mostly the wellbeing of the 380,000 ethnic Romanian-Moldovans living in the Transnistrian region, who are oppressed and persecuted, and live in constant fear and chaos. Similarly, as never before, of immediate concern is the future of another 2 million Romanian-Moldovans, left in the western part of the Republic also under authoritarian rule, and another 2 millions who emigrated as they could.
A ‘European’ solution, for stability and development in the Republic of Moldova, is acutely needed.” (Serafim Florea)

13 septembrie - ‘A Repertoire of Glories: Making Theatre in Romania after 1989’

13 septembrie - ‘A Repertoire of Glories: Making Theatre in Romania after 1989’Thursday 13 September 2007 – CULTURE POWER PRESENTATION: ‘A Repertoire of Glories: Making Theatre in Romania after 1989’ by Radu Alexandru Nica

19.00 – 21.00, The Romanian Cultural Centre, 8th floor, 54-62 Regent Street, London W1B 5RE; Tel. 020 7439 4052, ext 102; e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ; Entry is free but booking is essential.

“Romanian theatre swings between two poles, both dusty and sterile: psychological realism (used by the still living members of the ‘Golden Age’) and metaphorical symbolism (used by the 50-plus generation and some younger people who aged prematurely).
We believe that the new generations of artists tend to resemble their teachers. All clones. But, by far, the worst part is that they have greatness thrust upon them by the current system, and are promoted as paragons of talent. Whoever doesn’t feel this way will be an outcast. It hurts to say it, but these young people perform in a terribly old-fashioned way and often tend to do things even more badly than their predecessors.
The Romanian theatre, in order to align and synchronize with the aesthetic reality of the West and break its present semi-stagnant state, must approach the analysis of the NOW. Romanian theatre has to escape excessive aestheticism and reinvent realism. Today we need a new realism!” (Radu Alexandru Nica)

Radu Alexandru Nica is a Romanian theatre director. He studied theatre direction in Cluj and Munich. Radu believes that theatre should try to express the world as it is, without makeovers which are based on intellectual showing-off. Before directing his own shows, Radu worked as an assistant director for Andrei Serban and Silviu Purcarete, two of the greatest Romanian theatre directors. At the moment, Radu creates shows for the National Theatre ‘Radu Stanca’ in Sibiu, Transylvania, and also works with theatres in Bucharest, Cluj and TImisoara.
