Romanian Connections The ‘Radu Stanca’ National Theatre of Sibiu Tour in Liverpool
ProFusion International Creative Consultancy brings to Liverpool two extraordinary productions of the prestigious ‘Radu Stanca’ National Theatre of Sibiu, Romania.
“Romanian Connections is a unique moment in which a significant cultural event has travelled from its base in the Romanian city of Sibiu (2007 European Capital of Culture) to enrich the period of celebration in the city of Liverpool (2008 European Capital of Culture).
The events making up Romanian Connections in Liverpool during November 2008 aim at communicating a sense of the depth and richness of Romanian culture, but the season is focused around two distinct and contrasting aspects of Romanian theatre. At one end of the scale is the revival of a famed international classic, Waiting for Godot, featuring two of Romania’s most respected actors, and directed by the internationally acclaimed director Silviu Purcarete. On the other end of the scale isThe Ball, a show which sums up a new exploration by younger generations in the theatre, of the country’s recent history; in a fragmentary postmodernist style, a seamless mix of dance and music, humour and tragedy. The current Romanian Connections season, product of a successful partnership between the public and private sectors, brings in theatrical personalities, such as Constantin Chiriac and Silviu Purcarete, who are already well known in Britain, and through whom British audiences can better acquaint themselves with the culture of the country. As it happens this is, also, the first Romanian event of its scale and calibre to be seen in the North West, or indeed, anywhere in Britain outside of London, and it catches a unique moment in which the 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations have opened up new opportunities for cultural co-operation and for constituting new cultural markets.

Welcome to the Union is part of the Romanian Connections programme, the first major exercise in promoting Romania in North West England. Romanian Connections is centred on two theatre shows of the ‘Radu Stanca’ National Theatre of Sibiu (see full programme atwww.romanianculturalcentre.org.uk/connections). In order to create the basis of a better understanding of the richness of the Romanian cultural phenomena, The Ratiu Foundation / Romanian Cultural Centre in London, in partnership with ProFusion International Creative Consultancy, have initiated a series of connected events, of which this debate on contemporary Romania is the first.
Dr Mike Phillips OBE, Dr Alex Drace-Francis (University of Liverpool), Dr Wendy Webster (University of Central Lancashire), and Dr Ruxandra Trandafoiu (Edge Hill University) tackle the issues of contemporary Romania in the European context in front of a Liverpudlian audience. Join us for a fascinating and important debate.
“The status of Capital of Culture has become a new icon of European culture, a display window for European identity. On the other hand, current rhetoric about culture and the arts ignores a myriad of issues and problems, notably the cultural role and identity of accession states like Romania.

• Cold Waves (Razboi pe calea undelor) Romania / Germany / Luxembourg, 2007. Documentary, colour, 108 min. Romanian/English/French with English subtitles. Directed by Alexandru Solomon. Screening together with ‘Radio Heads: Liverpool Unzipped’.
This is a love and hate story built around something no one can see or touch: radio waves. During the 80’s, Radio Free Europe was the secret relief and confidant of its Romanian listeners. The Radio was Ceausescu’s most important enemy; he even hired Carlos to close it down. A strange alliance was thus forged, between a national-communist dictator and international terrorism. The world has changed, there are different wars now. But if you listen to the voices, you may get a better picture. Starring in the film are radio speakers, Carlos the Jackal and his lawyer, the chief of Securitate’s Ether group fighting the Radio, listeners and dissidents. Romanians, Americans, Germans, French...
• A Q&A with Alexandru Solomon will follow the screening.
“...What I liked about the history of Radio Free Europe from the very beginning was the persistency of a mythology of a radio, of some voices about which you can imagine anything. Beyond the myth, all kinds of paradoxes mingle. Nothing is what it seems. Add to all this: mystery, terrorists and all that muted but violent war. Plenty of reasons to go to the cinema.” (Alexandru Solomon in an interview given to Mihai Fulger, Astra Festival, October 2007)
