Strategically located in Central and Eastern Europe and with a population of 22
million people,Romania is the second largest market in the region and the UK’s
fourth largest export market.The country’s economy is vibrant,fast developing

goods and services were worth £784m in 2006: a 300% increase compared
with 1996.
Romania is one of the most recent EU member states,joining the EU in January
2007. Romania’s EU accession has improved the country’s economic outlook:
GDP growth was six percent in 2007 and hovered around 8.2 per cent in the first
quarter of 2008.
Romania offers foreign investors a highly skilled workforce at relatively low cost,
substantial natural resources and an established industrial base.British businesses
are among the leading investors in the country with direct investments worth
more than three million euros. Romania’s government is also committed to
improving the business environment by privatising state assets and adopting fair
market rules.
